Workers discover unexploded civil war bomb in Enugu

An unexploded bomb abandoned after the Nigeria-Biafra Civil War was discovered in Enugu State on Saturday.
The explosive, also known as unexploded ordinance (UXO) was found at a building site in the Ogui area of Enugu.
It was learnt that the discovery was made by workers at the site, who promptly alerted the Police.
The unexploded bomb was subsequently evacuated by the Anti-Bomb Unit of the Enugu State Police Command.
“The builders, on sighting the object, promptly alerted police operatives who quickly arrived at the scene for the evacuation of the unexploded ordinance,” Amaraizu said.Spokesman for the command, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, who confirmed the development, said the bomb was among the “civil war leftovers” buried in the ground in many of the areas where the war was fought.
He added that the police anti-bomb unit certified the area safe before the labourers resumed work.
Amaraizu said, “The Enugu State Police Command, through its Public Relations Department, has been sensitising members of the public on the need not to tamper with UXO when found during farming, on the road and building constructions but to promptly alert operatives or the nearest police station so that operatives can evacuate the object with their equipment.”
