Barely 24 hours before the controversial Oscars Awards, it was all about diversity as independent filmmakers were celebrated at the 31st Film Independent Spirit Awards, which took place at the Santa Monica Beach in California, on Saturday night.
Three of the four acting awards were awarded to black people, with Beasts of No Nation stars Abraham Attah (Best Male Lead) and Idris Elba (Best Supporting Male) winning alongside Tangerine breakout Mya Taylor (Best Supporting Female), who also became the first transgender actress to win a major award.
