Police arrest woman for selling her baby


Enoch Oyikepreye, 28, has been arrested by  the Bayelsa State Police Command for selling off her three-month-old baby.
The arrest was made known in a statement on Wednesday, January 27, by the spokesman of the police, Asinim Butswat, saying that the suspect sold the baby girl to a 30-years-old lady, Tony Estehr.
The police added that the suspect is already undergoing interrogation at the Akenfa Police Station in Yenagoa local government area of the state.
Daily Post reported that though the motive behind the infant was unclear but noted that the baby’s mother probably sod her for N300, 000.
Butswat said: “Detectives from the Akenfa Police Station, Yenagoa, have arrested one Enoch Oyikepreye, female, 28 years, for allegedly selling a three-month-old baby girl to one Esther Tony, female, 30.
“The suspect sold the baby, who is her child, for N300, 000. Oyikepreye and Esther are undergoing interrogation at the Akenfa Police Station, Yenagoa.”
Meanwhile, drama has played out in Uzere community of Isoko South local government area in Delta state as a suspected rapist claimed to the paternity of a newborn.
This claim has sparked uneasiness in the community.
It was learnt that the new baby boy was delivered under unlawful circumstances.
Also, the mother of the newborn whose name was withheld was  allegedly ambushed and raped by the suspect while she was on her way to the farmland. She was later discovered to be pregnant.Sources in the community disclosed that the lady who is in her early 20s had suffered emotional trauma after being defiled by the suspect.
Another source stated that family of the suspect made moves to take custody of the baby who was reportedly delivered two-week ago, but their efforts did not succeed as family of the lady threatened to invite the police.
The mother of the suspect, Eunice Ogbodor told Leadership that: “My son said it was based on agreement that they made love on her way to the farmland, since then it has been war, we begged, they refused.”
Responding to the incident, spokesman of the police, Celestina Kalu, said that the suspect who claimed to be the father of the newborn ran away when he knew the police might come calling.
She said:“The police are still investigating the alleged rape, and we will ensure the suspect is brought to book it.”
